Does Home Insurance Cover Damage from Earthquakes?

February is Earthquake Awareness Month, and COUNTRY Financial® is spreading awareness about insurance coverage for earthquakes.

According to the United States Geological Survey, nearly 75 percent of the United States could experience damaging earthquake shaking. Manage your risk by checking on your insurance coverages to prepare for natural disasters such as earthquakes.

Earthquakes are not typically covered by most home insurance policies, but COUNTRY offers additional coverage through an endorsement that provides protection in case of an earthquake. Learn more about home insurance coverage for earthquakes. At COUNTRY Financial®, about 7 percent of new homeowner clients opt to purchase earthquake coverage – ranging from a high of 14 percent in Alaska to less than 1 percent in other states.

It’s important to note that earthquake coverage has a percentage deductible, and that deductible applies separately to each coverage impacted. Talk to your COUNTRY Financial® representative and learn more about deductibles for earthquake claims.

To prepare your home for an earthquake, use these tips from Ready.gov:

  • Make an emergency plan that includes a place for your family to meet if you get separated and assemble a supply kit.
  • Secure heavy items in your home like bookcases, refrigerators, water heaters, televisions and other heavy objects that hang on walls. Consider making improvements to your home to fix structural issues that could cause your home to collapse during an earthquake.
