Prepare for Hurricane Season:  New Survey by COUNTRY Financial® Reveals 35% of People Worry About Weather Damage to Their Homes

BLOOMINGTON, IL  – With Hurricane season running June 1 – November 30, a new survey from  COUNTRY Financial® found that 35% of people are concerned about potential damage to their homes or property due to weather-related incidents.  It’s important for residents in hurricane areas to take necessary precautions and begin preparations now.

According to NOAA forecasters with the Climate Prediction Center, a division of the National Weather Service, they are predicting near-normal hurricane activity in the Atlantic this year. They are forecasting a range of 12 to 17 named storms (winds 39 mph or higher) and 5 to 9 could be become hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or higher).

To be prepared, COUNTRY Financial recommends that residents in the hurricane prone areas take these steps:

  • ask their insurance agents about their homeowner’s policy coverage
  • make copies of important documents and storing them in a dry place
  • create an emergency supply kit with essential items
  • develop an evacuation route
  • plan for your pets
  • take an inventory of their household items and take photos / videos of them, this will be crucial in the event of filing an insurance claim after the storm

“Preparedness is key when it comes to hurricanes and other severe weather events,” said John Butkus, director, property claims, COUNTRY Financial. “By taking these necessary precautions, residents can help protect themselves, their homes, and their property.”

Flood damage is not included in a general home insurance policy, but it is available through the National Flood Insurance Program.  Learn more about how to prepare for hurricane season
