When you think you’ve found your dream home, call your insurance agent to learn up to seven years of insurance claims history for the property. By running a Comprehensive Loss Underwriting Exchange (C.L.U.E.) report, your insurance agent can get a comprehensive list of claims so you can verify that proper repairs were made before you make an offer.
When you’re considering monthly costs, look beyond the mortgage. Think about what it costs to upkeep, improve, and protect that house. In addition to applicable property taxes and any homeowner association fees, find out what it will cost to insure the home. Contact your insurance agent for a homeowners insurance quote or start online.
When you’re buying a house, you want to save money wherever you can. Ask your insurance agent about home insurance discounts. If you have both home and car insurance, you could take advantage of multi-policy discounts.
A deductible is money you will pay out-of-pocket when you have a claim before your home insurance starts to cover your expenses. If you prefer to have lower premium payments on your home insurance, you might set your deductible higher. However, having a higher deductible means you’ll have to pay more money out of pocket when you file a claim.
You have other coverage options to consider that aren’t included in your standard home insurance policy. For example, if you’re buying a house with a basement and sump pump, you and your insurance agent should discuss adding sump pump coverage to your policy. Check out our helpful home insurance information including what’s covered and what’s not covered by your policy.
Follow these five home insurance tips to be a more informed homeowner. You’ll feel better about your new home and the home insurance you secure to protect it.
