When parking your vehicle, choose well-lit and secure areas such as garages, parking lots with attendants, or areas covered by surveillance cameras. A visible and secure location can act as a deterrent for potential thieves.
Always remember to lock your car, even if you are away for just a few minutes. Double-check that all windows are closed, and never leave your keys in the ignition, even when running a quick errand. Also, never leave your car running unattended.
Consider installing security features such as car alarms, steering wheel locks, and immobilizers. These devices can prevent car theft by deterring thieves and making it more difficult for them to steal your vehicle.
Adding extra security to your vehicle may also help you save money on car insurance - did you know you may be eligible for a discount on your car insurance if you install an alarm or other anti-theft devices? Talk to your insurance agent to learn more.
Keep valuable items like wallets, purses and electronics, like laptops or cell phones, out of sight or locked in the trunk. Visible valuables can attract thieves and could lead to a break-in.
Having your VIN etched onto your vehicle's windows can make it less attractive to thieves. It also helps authorities identify and recover your vehicle if it’s stolen.
A combination of comprehensive coverage and personal effects coverage can help if you experience theft or vandalism to your car.
Comprehensive coverage protects you when something happens to your car causing damage. If your vehicle is stolen or vandalized, the comprehensive coverage included in your auto insurance would cover the cost to repair your car, subject to the limits in your coverage and minus the deductible.
Personal effects coverage provides reimbursement if things like your phone or laptop are stolen from your car. Remember there are limited amounts to this coverage, so talk to your insurance agent to confirm your coverage limit.
Report the theft and file a car insurance claim.
If your vehicle is stolen, promptly report the incident to the police and file a car insurance claim. Provide them with all necessary information, including the police report number and the vehicle details, and information on any personal property stolen with the vehicle. Quick and accurate reporting will help the claims process to go more smoothly.
Taking steps to protect your vehicle can lower your risk of auto theft. Talk with your insurance agent to make sure you have the proper coverage for your vehicle and learn more about auto insurance coverages.
